By Tonia Caselman, Ph.D.

Helping children develop greater empathy-related awareness and skills can help prevent negative social behaviors such as bullying, meanness, and alienation. Empathy is a fundamental social emotion because it brings a sense of emotional connection to others. It is this awareness that is not only basic to all healthy relationships, but also the root of pro-social behavior, altruism, kindness and peace. Empathy has cognitive, affective and behavioral components that can be learned and improved upon by children. Each topic-related lesson includes five inviting worksheets that can be reproduced and used repeatedly with elementary school-aged students.

Sebastian ★★★★★

I got this for my K-2 kiddos and the feelings-recognition section has been a lifesaver during morning meeting. The lessons on showing understanding are simple enough that even my youngest can follow along without me over-explaining.

I run a lunch bunch group for grades 3-5 and the section on recognizing your own feelings before others' has been gold for my kids who shut down. The K-6 range means I can pull the same activity for a second grader and a sixth grader without it feeling babyish. Worth every penny for a school counsel

Alexander Q. ★★★★★

The group exercises on recognizing feelings have been a game-changer for my third graders, and the K-6 range means I can adapt them for my younger daughter at home too. My kids actually started asking each other "how would you feel if..." during recess, which felt like a small miracle.
