Operation Game

A laugh-out-loud classic that’s secretly packed with skill-building. In the classic Operation electronic board game, kids get to play “the doctor” and help Cavity Sam feel better—without touching the sides and setting off the famous buzz (and flashing red nose!). It’s an easy-to-learn, high-engagement game that families love for game night, rainy days, and screen-free fun.
12 silly “ailments” keep the challenge fresh. From the wishbone and charlie horse to water on the knee and writer’s cramp, kids choose a Doctor card and try to remove the matching piece with the tweezers. Stay steady, move slowly, and celebrate the win when you avoid the buzzer.
Why parents love it: It’s funny, quick to set up, and encourages patience and focus. Kids naturally practice taking turns, following directions, and sticking with a task—even when it gets tricky.
Why occupational therapists love it: Operation is a playful way to target a variety of pediatric OT skills, including:
- Fine motor control (precise pincer grasp, graded movement, controlled release)
- Hand strength & endurance (sustaining grip on tweezers, stabilizing the hand)
- Bilateral coordination (one hand stabilizes while the other performs a precise task)
- Visual-motor integration and hand-eye coordination (aligning tweezers to the target)
- Motor planning and impulse control (slow, purposeful movement to avoid the buzz)
- Attention, frustration tolerance, and self-regulation (reset and try again)
Make it easier or harder: Start with larger pieces first, allow two hands on the tweezers, or practice outside the board before moving to the “surgery.” To increase the challenge, add a timer, use only the dominant hand, or create “rules” like holding a steady posture and keeping elbows off the table.
How to win: Successfully remove the piece without touching the sides to earn the money on the back of the card. The player with the most money at the end wins—bragging rights included!
Recommended for ages 6+. Great for family game night, homeschool breaks, OT sessions, and indoor play with friends.
