  • Fine Motor Skill Builder: Pushing, pulling, and placing the pieces helps strengthen hand muscles and develop pincer grasp, finger isolation, and controlled release.
  • Bilateral Coordination: Kids naturally use two hands together—one to hold the potato body steady and the other to place and remove parts.
  • Visual-Motor And Spatial Skills: Matching pieces to the right spots and orienting them correctly supports visual-motor integration, spatial awareness, and motor planning.
  • Body Awareness And Language: Great for learning body parts and practicing concepts like “top/bottom,” “left/right,” and “in/out,” which supports early direction-following and communication.
  • Social-Emotional Play: Create silly faces and talk about feelings, expressions, and perspective-taking through playful, low-pressure interaction.
  • Easy Storage Built In: Pieces store inside the potato body for quick cleanup and portable play.

Mr. Potato Head is a classic OT-friendly toy that turns pretend play into purposeful skill practice. Kids can mix and match pieces to build silly faces while strengthening fine motor control, improving coordination, and practicing visual-motor skills. It is an easy win for therapy sessions, classrooms, and home programs because it stays motivating, encourages creativity, and can be graded for different skill levels.

How OTs Use It

  • Hand Strength Warm-Up: Place and remove pieces for 1–2 minutes before handwriting or scissor tasks.
  • Direction Challenges: “Put the hat on top,” “Put the shoes on,” or “Put the nose in the middle” to practice listening and spatial concepts.
  • Crossing Midline: Place pieces on the left side and have kids reach across to place them on the right (and switch).
  • Feelings Faces: Build a “happy,” “sad,” or “surprised” face and talk about what those feelings look like.

Set Includes: 1 potato body and 12 accessories (13 pieces total).

William ★★★★★

The pieces are easy for my little one to grasp and the controlled release when pulling them off is great practice. I've noticed his hand coordination improving after just a few weeks of play.

Ava P. ★★★★★

My toddler loves pushing the arms and legs into place, and I've noticed better finger control after just a few play sessions. It’s also great seeing her coordinate both hands to snap on the hat.

Steven O. ★★★★★

We've been working on bilateral coordination with my 4-year-old, and this toy makes it fun—he has to hold the body with one hand while screwing on the arm with the other. The pieces are just the right size for his little fingers.
